“Le Noeud”
SS’ 23
BS Capstone Collection
My collection titled "Le Noeud" which means knots in French draws inspiration from the sea, 19th century fishery culture, and Normandy France.
Growing up I spent my summers at the beaches of Sea Girt. The ocean, wherever I may be, has become a comfort to me. While traveling in France, I was drawn to visit the Northern coast. I was inspired by the juxtaposition between my childhood shore and the ‘life aquatic' culture of Seine-Maritime, small town Etretat, in Normandy France.
Normandy is the heart and primary source of reference for my garments. The root word of Normandy, Normant + ie, means ‘North Man’ as original normans were of Scandinavian origin- this collection being my take on North Men.
Le Noeud is a menswear collection that features re-contextualized historical fishing and boating garment silhouettes from France in the 1960’s. This work embodies the fisherfolk lifestyle: water waders, a raincoat, a life preserver vest, and utility workwear. Additionally the design includes unconventional materials such as fishing net, signal flags, shells, knots, burlap, and waxed canvas to emulate the rugged sea life aesthetic. Texture inspiration was pulled from black and white photographs my father, William Sitar captured on the beaches of Sea Girt, New Jersey. Other notable explorations include fabric manipulations like natural dyeing, bleaching, and Japanese 3D shibori, mimicking tentacles. All together, this collection is both aquatic and nostalgic.
